Illinois lawmakers to consider controversial medical marijuana bill

Among the issues to be tackled by Illinois lawmakers in the coming weeks is the possibility of legalizing medical marijuana. As we've previously mentioned, the measure has been controversial among Illinois lawmakers.

Six people arrested for marijuana possession over weekend

Last weekend, six individuals remain in custody after being arrested in East Chicago on suspicion of drug possession. The arrests stemmed from four separate incidents. Three of the individuals were arrested at an apartment after a drug complaint had been filed. Officers reportedly say cannabis in plain sight in an apartment after viewing a cloud of marijuana smoke in the hallway. In another incident, police arrested a 28-year-old man after he refused to quiet down outside an apartment building and was found to be carrying marijuana.

Feds battle cartels seeking children for dangerous drug trafficking work

With the recent talk about legalizing marijuana, it is a disturbing reminder to hear about the dangerous activity happening on the U.S.-Mexican border. According to federal agents, teens and children as young as 12 years old are becoming involved in the drug smuggling trade on the U.S.-Mexico border, and may be at risk for recruitments. Last year, 190 teens-ages 18 and younger-were caught smuggling drugs along the San Ysidro-San Diego Country border.

Legalized recreational marijuana still long way off for Illinois

While seventeen states have already approved use of marijuana by people with certain medical conditions, there had been no states that approved marijuana for recreational use until Tuesday. Washington and Colorado, which both had ballot initiatives on the issue, both passed their measures. Those states are now waiting to hear how the federal government will respond to the measures.

Chicago officer sentenced to 18 months for scheme involving drug dealer informant

Last Friday, a 47-year-old Chicago cop was sentenced to 18 months in prison after being convicted for ripping off $5,200 in cash that he believed belonged to a drug dealer. The homeless man the officer stole the money from last November 21 was actually an FBI informant. Another officer involved in the scheme was, according to the recently convicted officer, the brains behind the operation.
