Actress Rose McGowan to fight drug charges

Illinois movie fans may be interested to learn that Rose McGowan says she intends to fight a drug possession charge leveled against her in Virginia. The actress turned herself in to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police on Nov. 14, and she was scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 16.

According to authorities, officers discovered cocaine in a wallet McGowan left on a flight that landed at Virginia’s Washington Dulles International Airport on Jan. 20. They charged her with possession of a controlled substance and set her free on bond.

However, McGowan told the media that she does not use cocaine and the drug may have been planted in her wallet. She has further claimed that she flew to Virginia to take part in the Women’s March in Washington, D.C., and had no interest in putting a controlled substance in her body for that “sisterly” event. Finally, she has suggested that her arrest could be linked to her public rape accusations against high-powered movie producer Harvey Weinstein. In October, she took to Twitter to question whether the drug charges were an attempt to “silence” her. McGowan starred in the TV series “Charmed” and in the films “Scream,” “Jawbreaker” and “Planet Terror.” She is an outspoken advocate for women’s rights in Hollywood.

Drug charges often carry serious consequences for those who are convicted. However, defendants don’t need to face the legal system alone. A criminal defense attorney could stand by a defendant’s side, protect their rights and help build a strong defense against the prosecution’s case. For example, if drugs were planted on the defendant, legal counsel may be able to get the case dismissed. In other circumstances, an attorney could negotiate a plea bargain that lowers the charges and penalties.
